Tessellations

Understanding geometric patterns is an important part of understanding the world around you.  In this lesson you learn about geometric patterns.  They are an important part of history and everyday life today.  Once you have examined how geometric shapes are used to create patterns, you will create your own unique tile to demonstrate your understanding

Geometric Definitions:

In this section, you will learn the geometry behind tessellating.  Fill out the    Use the web sites listed below to help you find the answers.

Creating Tessellations with Regular Polygons

There are two parts to this section.  First you will tessellate using only one regular polygon.  You must label your vertices.  Be sure to scroll to find the information. Then,  you will tessellate using at least two regular polygons

You will be graded on two main criteria;  how well you followed the rules of tessellation and creativity.  Use the web pages below to help you with the rules and give you some creative ideas.

Tessellating with Irregular Polygons

In this activity you get a chance to show how creative you can be.  Create a tessellation or tile using at least one irregular polygon. Use the web sites below if you need help or ideas.

Examples of tessellations using irregular polygons:

Polypolygon tilings:  By combining several regular polygons, you can make a really cool irregular polygon. This page has some great examples of "polyominoes."
