Blogs, Wikis and Podcasts

Blogs, wikis and podcasts are the some of the most useful tools for educators.   This workshop will help you understand about more about these tools.  Before you jump in use a tool  in your classroom you should use and be comfortable with that  technological tool

Blogs and Wikis

Before you create a blog, it is a good idea to subscribe to blogs that are of interest you. Then once you find blogs that you would enjoying reading, you should join a Reader program to keep up with your blogs.  Finally when you are ready to create your own blog you can join one of the many free sites that allow you to create a blog.To find out what a blog is check out Blog Basics from TeachersFirst.

Google Blog Search:  Like all else that Google creates, this blog search engine is easy to use and comprehensive.

Creating your own blog:

Kidblog: This simple but effective blogging tool is great for students of all ages, but is especially useful for young students.

Edmodo: This is a more sophisticated blogging tool for older students.

Class Blogs:  In addition to blogging students can hand in assignments electronically.

Blogmeister:  Great site for setting up a classroom blog.  Has a lot of teacher controls.

Glogster:  This a cross between a blog and a facebook wall.  It is very motivating for students and has many educational applications. It costs a nominal fee.

Wikis

Wikis are different from blogs in that they are interactive.  If given permission, users can post and change information.    

TeachersFirst:  This an excellent tutorial that tells you everything you need to know about wikis and them some.  If you are serious about using a wiki, take the time to explore this site.

pbworks:  There a limited free version for teachers.  It is easy to use and for most teachers, the free version has enough features..

Podcasts

A podcast is a collection of digital media files which is distributed over the Internet,  for playback on portable media players and personal computers. They are like an auditory blog.
