Teacher Angelica Roddy and Grace MortinFifth Grader Gets Sweet Reward for Memorizing 107 Digits of Pi

What do you get when you memorize 107 digits of Pi? In Angelica Roddy's fifth grade class at Tamarac Elementary, the opportunity to put a whipped cream pie in the face of your teacher. “I thought it was a fun way to end our geometry unit,” Mrs. Roddy said. “I think they’ll never forget what Pi is.” Student Grace Mortin won the opportunity by memorizing an astounding107 digits. Congratulations to Tamarac's most recent alumni! A total of 106 graduates walked across the stage at the 52nd Annual Commencement Ceremony held June 24. A total of 43 students earned Regents Diplomas, three students earned Regents Diplomas with Honors, 25 students earned Regents Diplomas with Advanced Designation, 23 students earned Regents Diplomas with Advanced Designation with Honors, and four students earned Career & Technology Endorsements. Joseph LyleMiddle School Student Creates Website to Help Others With Disability

In the hopes of helping others who have the same disability, Tamarac Middle School student Joseph Lyle created a website, www.amcawarenessgroup.org, to share information about Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. "At first it was to inform people about what I have but now it's to help others with what they are going through," said Joseph. Senior Chelsea Naylor receives awardSenior Chelsea Naylor Honored With Award

Senior Chelsea Naylor was honored in June with the inaugural James M. Baldwin award for excelling at Tech Valley High School. Chelsea also received a $100 scholarship. Chelsea is a member of the first graduating class of Tech Valley High School, a school that emphasizes math, science and technology using project-based learning. Students Honored at Rensselaer Education Center Annual Awards Night

Tamarac students were honored in June at the Questar III Rensselaer Educational Center Annual Awards Night for excellence in BOCES programs. Cynthia Garcia, Roland Judd, Taylor Lewis and Chantel Moore received Craftsmanship Awards.  Chris Costello, Destini Folmsbee and Joshua Shaw received Most Improved Awards. A student from Tamarac and a student from China became close friends at Odyssey of the MindStudents Excel at Odyssey of the Mind World Finals

Competing against students from China, South Korea and across the United States, Tamarac Elementary students finished eighth out of 61 teams in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals held at the University of Maryland from May 27-30. But it was the friendships that students made with other children from around the world that they will remember the most. "They didn't want it to end. Safety AwardDistrict Receives School Safety Excellence Award

Brunswick (Brittonkill) CSD recently received a School Safety Excellence Award from Utica National Insurance Group. The National Honor Society welcomed it latest class of members on May 26 as the High School held its annual induction ceremony for 15 students. Senior Liesa Lajeunesse and teacher Mark SpitzerSenior Wins Film Festival Award; Watch Her Video Online

Tamarac senior Liesa Lajeunesse won the Best Cinematography award at this year's Rod Serling Video Festival, a competition featuring hundreds of entries from across New York State. Liesa's music video "Tunnel" by the band The Used was created as a school project for her TV and Video Production class, shot entirely on location in Brunswick. Liesa directed, edited and acted in the video. Liesa was honored at a ceremony on June 3 in Binghamton, accompanied by teacher Mark Spitzer. Tamarac seniors Sarah Malsch and Daniel O'Brien were featured in The Times Union on May 26 after earning a Scholar Athlete award from the Sports Foundation of the Greater Capital Region. Sarah was selected for the award for excelling in volleyball and track and earning a 96.3 average. Daniel was selected for excelling in golf and baseball and earning a 90.1 average. Tamarac students had an opportunity to talk about issues they're passionate about and share the research they did as part of an Honors Seminar event on May 24. Tamarac senior Wade Hansen was honored at the 23rd Annual Scholar-Athletes Awards Dinner on May 9 for excelling not only on the field but in the classroom and community as well. The event was hosted by the Capital District Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Tamarac eighth-grader Jacob Spencer recently won an award for an essay he wrote as part of the B'nai B'rith Capital Area Holocaust Essay Contest. Jacob won third place in the contest that featured entries from middle and high school students from a 12 county area. His essay, which was part of an extra-credit enrichment assignment, addressed the question of "How Can Students, Teachers, and Schools Apply Lessons from the Holocaust of World War II To Prevent Holocausts Today and Tomorrow?" Tamarac Junior Wins First Place, Trip to Russia for Essay Contest

Tamarac junior David Connor will be heading to Tula, Russia next fall after winning first place in a Russian Studies Olympiad. Children at the Double H Hole in the Woods Ranch and Unity House will receive some comfort in the form of teddy bears that were dressed and cared for by Tamarac Elementary students. Each year, students dress teddy bears that are donated and fill them with strength, love and hope as a way to help other children and teach students about the importance of helping others. Author Jan JenkinsStudents Learn Important Lesson About Keeping Each Other Safe

Tamarac Secondary School students received a powerful message about keeping each other safe during a visit by author Jan Jenkins in April. Sharing her own story of how her 21-year-old son went missing and was later found murdered, Mrs. Jenkins urged students to be careful and work together to help each other be safe. "If you care about one another, you'll take care of one another," Mrs. Jenkins said. "If there are two of you together, the chances of getting abducted drops by 80 percent." Read more... Thanks to funding provided by the Brittonkill Educational Foundation, Tamarac High School students learned first-hand about the roles and responsibilities of parenting this year with advanced infant simulators. The simulators showed students that parenting requires being woken up at night, having a diaper changed at a moment's notice and a strong back to carry. Students Dylan Jones, Andrew Lang and Kelly Smith compete in Viking ChallengeTamarac Students Win Competition at HVCC

A team of four Tamarac High School students took home the top prize on April 13 at the Viking Challenge, an annual general knowledge contest for high school students sponsored by Hudson Valley Community College. Students won a Netbook computer for the school. Each student also received a scientific calculator, a copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica Ultimate Reference Suite and a $500 scholarship to HVCC. The Tamarac girls varsity basketball team was recognized by the Board of Education on April 12 for excelling in academics. The team was named a Scholar/Athlete team by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for earning a team average of at least 90. Katsumi Yoneda talks with studentsTamarac Community Raises More Than $2,000 to Help Japan

Victims of the earthquake in Japan will receive disaster relief supplies such as family tents, blankets and water purification equipment thanks to the Tamarac community. A fundraising effort started at Tamarac Elementary School raised more than $2,000 to help the thousands of Japanese citizens who lost their homes when a tsunami triggered by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit the country on March 8. The Character ChroniclesEighth Graders Write Literary Journals in English Class

As part of their English class, eighth grade students have created literary journals called The Character Chronicles this year. Students write poems and stories where they write about each month's character education theme. "These personal and inspiring pieces of writing have become a powerful outlet for the 8th graders to define their feelings and beliefs about the importance of each character trait in their own lives," said teacher Alison Maloy. Senior Taylor LewisSenior Taylor Lewis Finishes First in Competition

Tamarac senior Taylor Lewis recently took first place in a SkillsUSA competition, an event which challenges students enrolled in career and technical education programs. Taylor finished first in the Cosmetology Senior category as part of the regional competition which was held at Schenectady County Community College and involved 400 students from 12 career tech high schools. After success at regional and state competitions, a team of seven Tamarac Elementary students will head to Maryland in May after qualifying for the World Finals of Odyssey of the Mind. Students worked since October before school, on weekends and over recesses to create a humorous skit and device for the competition. Two other Tamarac teams also performed well at the regional competition in early March. “I’m so proud of the students,” said teacher Chris Siegenthaler. “The world competition is an opportunity for them to meet kids from around the world. To the delight of the seventh grade class, social studies teacher Kevin Onorato shaved his head at school on March 25 after losing a challenge for a food drive. Mr. Onorato was so confident his homeroom would raise the most items for a food drive for Joseph’s House and Shelter in Troy, he agreed to shave his head if they didn’t. Middle School Students Sponsor Food Drive to Help Local Homeless Shelter

Tamarac Middle School students are sponsoring a food drive to benefit Joseph’s House and Shelter in Troy. The food drive runs until March 18. Donations can be given to students to bring in to class or dropped off in the Secondary School lobby. Refugees living in Baltimore, Maryland are getting their first opportunity to play organized soccer with their own equipment thanks to Tamarac's boys varsity and JV soccer teams. Tamarac students donated equipment and collected monetary donations for the Soccer Without Borders program to help refugees from other parts of the world living in Baltimore play the game they love and integrate to their new country. District Offers Free Strengthening Families Workshops

Parents looking for advice on how to talk with their children ages 10 to 14 about the issues they face are encouraged to attend the free Strengthening Families workshops on Wednesdays starting March 9. Tamarac Middle School students helped bring hope to a Schodack man who lost his home to a fire the day after Christmas. Students created an oversized card with well wishes for Fred Baye as part of an English class discussion about random acts of kindness. Tamarac Elementary School students have the opportunity this year to get exercise on modern gym equipment thanks to a federal physical education grant. Tamarac Masterminds Team Excels in Competition

The Tamarac Masterminds team defeated first place Averill Park on January 7. The Tamarac team was then narrowly defeated in the second competition by Voorheesville by just one question. Masterminds is a local school competition where students answer general knowledge questions. Student athletes from five varsity teams were honored for academic excellence for earning at least a 90% team average for the first quarter. Tamarac’s girls cross country team, boys golf, boys soccer, girls soccer and girls volleyball were all recognized by the Board of Education at its January 4 meeting. Hat and Mitten TreeStudents Donate Clothing to Those in Need

Tamarac Middle School and Elementary School students came together on December 14 to decorate the Hat and Mitten Tree with clothing that will go to those in need. Students at the Winter Walk for the HomelessStudents Volunteer to Raise Money and Awareness for Homeless

Nearly two dozen Tamarac students from the Class of 2012 volunteered their time on December 4 to participate in Joseph’s House Winter Walk for the Homeless in Troy. This year's annual Tamarac Spelling Bee was a youth movement compared to past competitions with sixth grader Camille Gardner besting students in fifth to eighth grade. Reminder for Parents About Cafeteria Charges Policy

Food Services Director Joy Wright would like to remind parents that if their student owes more than three lunch charges, those charges must be paid before the student can receive a full lunch. Students can only receive a sandwich, fruit and milk for lunch until the charges are paid. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but it is necessary to keep the Food Service program a self-funded program. Tamarac Senior Lindsay Doyle Honored for Completing Economics for Leaders Program

Tamarac Senior Lindsay Doyle was recently honored with a Certificate of Achievement for completing an Economics for Leaders program. Lindsay attended the program at the College of William and Mary over the summer. The educational program helps high school seniors explore the correlation between economics and leadership; they are then tested to measure whether students understand the economic principals they've studied. The American Red Cross received some much needed blood donations thanks to the Tamarac Key Club. Tamarac students worked with the Red Cross to hold a blood drive on November 3. Senior Robyn Caldwell explained both students and community members come out for the annual blood drive, which fits into the Key Club's mission of improving communities through volunteer work. The Brunswick Cares Community Food Pantry's shelves were stocked with hundreds of food items thanks to Tamarac students. Tamarac schools have switched to a biodegradable cafeteria tray this year thanks to senior Shauna Michel, who researched the environmental damage Styrofoam does and presented to the Board of Education. "The environment is a big thing for me," Shauna said. "This was kind of a personal project because I wasn't getting graded. But it's a good feeling because I know I did something  to help." Russian students show slides from their countryRussian Exchange Students Visit Tamarac

A group of 16 Russian students visited Tamarac recently as part of the Tamarac-Moscow Russian Exchange Program. The exchange program started 22 years ago and is the oldest such program in New York State. "We are very impressed by your warm welcome," said Irina Gogoleva, a visiting Russian teacher. Juniors Tegan Fox and Kelly Smith Selected for Chorus Performances

Congratulations to juniors Tegan Fox and Kelly Smith for their selection to perform in area chorus performances. Tegan was selected for the Empire State Youth Chorale, which will sing “Melodies of Christmas” at Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady in December. More than 175 students auditioned for 70 positions. Kelly was selected for the NYS School Music Association Area All State High School Chorus. Work on wastewater treatment facility beginsWork Begins to Upgrade District Wastewater Treatment Facility

Work has begun to upgrade the district's wastewater treatment facility to fix an ongoing issue with ammonia. The project is expected to be completed by the end of November. The new treatment facility will utilize an aeration system; the school district will be able to reuse existing wastewater treatment facility equipment including an equalization tank, pumps, sand filters and ultraviolet disinfection system. Changes to Food Services Program

Athletic Director Donna Van ZandtDonna Van Zandt Named Athletic Director

Donna Van Zandt will return as Athletic Director for the Brunswick (Brittonkill) Central School District for the new school year. Ms. Van Zandt was appointed by the Board of Education at its August 10 meeting. She previously worked for the district for 20 years, including serving 13 years as Athletic Director. “This is something I’ve always loved doing,” Ms. Van Zandt said. “It’s rewarding to help children succeed, and not just in athletics.” Read more... Parents who return a completed Free and Reduced Price Lunch application to the district by Sept. 30 will receive a free breakfast for their student.
