Tamarac High School has been asked to showcase
its Honors Seminar Class at a conference in October where
students and teachers will explain the concept for their program
to educators from across the state.
High School teacher Tim Jacques explained
Tamarac was asked to present at the 4th Annual Capital Region
Conference on the Inquiry Approach to Research, which will be
held at Hudson Valley Community College on October 28.
"Our presentation will focus on an overview of
the seminar, the guiding principles of participation, public
speaking, critical writing and reading, the integration of
technology, community action and the inquiry approach to
research," said Mr. Jacques, who teaches the Honors Seminar
class with teacher Aimee Bishop and library media specialist
Michelle Furlong.
Tamarac High School started the 9th and 10th
Grade Honors Seminar Class last year to provide students an
opportunity to develop skills they'll need in college, such as
facilitating discussions, writing research papers and reading
critically.
Students meet for the elective class every
other day and lead discussions on a variety of topics from
literature to social issues.
At the conference in October, students are
expected to join Mr. Jacques, Ms. Bishop, Ms. Furlong and
Principal Rich Pogue to talk about the Honors Seminar Class.
The conference brings together students,
library media specialists, teachers and administrators from
across the state. Last year, approximately 140 school officials
attended the conference.
"This will allow us to showcase Tamarac's
innovative approach to meeting the needs of our high-achieving
students and provide an authentic presentation experience for
the students who attend," added Mr. Jacques.
