LIBRARY CLASSES AND THE
CURRICULUM

K
By the end of kindergarten, students should be able
to:
- Choose books of interest from a pre-selected group of
books.
- Identify each of the following parts of a book: cover
and spine
- Recognize and define the terms title, author, and
illustrator
- Locate picture book and nonfiction sections of the
library
- Be aware of the fact that information is available in
many forms: book, computer, magazine, etc.
Kindergarten activities may include:
- Story time
- Choose from pre-selected books
- Creative dramatics

1st
By the end of first grade, students should be able
to:

Choose leisure reading material of interest

Identify each of the following parts of a book and use
each to find information: title page and table of contents

Identify the title, author, illustrator and call
number for books

Locate the Online Public Access Catalog -- the OPAC
-
Find the shelf area in which any particular picture
book belongs
-
Identify picture book, fiction, nonfiction and
magazine sections of the library
-
Be aware of the fact that information is available in
many forms: book, computer, magazine, etc.
First grade activities may include:
- Story time
- Book selection (choose independently from the shelves in the picture book and non-fiction areas.)
- Creative dramatics

2nd
By the end of second grades, students should be able
to:

Choose leisure reading material of interest

Identify each of the following parts of a book and use
them to find information: title page, copyright page, table of
contents

Identify the title, author, illustrator, publication
or copyright date, and call number for any given book

Locate the Online Public Access Catalog - the OPAC

Find the shelf area in which any particular picture
book belongs

Locate picture book, fiction, nonfiction, magazine and
reference sections of the library

Extract needed information from a print or
computerized encyclopedia article
-
Produce a project such as a written report or poster
which presents information learned through research
Second grade activities may include:
- Story time
- Introduction to the Dewey Decimal system
- Beginning research skills
- Use electronic encyclopedias and children’s Internet sites
- Develop familiarity with library terminology: for example, call number,
publication date

3rd
By the end of third grade, students should be able
to:
- Use the OPAC to find a book if title is known
- Find a fiction book or easy/picture book on the shelf if you know
its call number
- Identify picture book, fiction, nonfiction, magazine and reference
sections of the library
- Locate information in each of these sources: print encyclopedia,
electronic encyclopedia, dictionary
- Use a teacher or librarian-selected Internet site to find
information
- Identify each of the following parts of a book and use each to find
information: title page, copyright page, table of contents, index
- Choose leisure reading material of interest
- Produce a project such as a written report or poster which presents
information learned through research
Third grade activities may include:
Literature appreciation
Storytelling
Folk and fairy tales around the world
Use of print and electronic encyclopedias
Dictionary use
Book location skills in picture book and fiction sections
Continued practice in use of OPAC (online public access catalog)

By the end of fourth grade, students should be able
to:

Use the OPAC to find book if title or author is known

Find a book on the shelf if call number is known

Seek and locate information in each of these sources:
print encyclopedia, computerized encyclopedia, atlas, dictionary

Take notes from an Internet site for information and
identify the site's title and URL (address)

Follow a standard format to create a bibliography for
each of these types of sources: book, encyclopedia article, Internet
web site

Identify each of the following parts of a book and use
each of them to find information within the book: title page,
copyright page, table of contents, glossary, index
-
Choose leisure reading material of interest
-
Produce a project such as a written report or oral
presentation, etc. in which you present information learned through
research.
Fourth grade activities may include:
Literature appreciation
Poetry
Book location skills throughout the library
Use of print and electronic reference sources, for example encyclopedias
Use of children’s search engines and directories for Internet research
Research skills put to use in class projects

By the end of fifth grade, students should be able
to:

Use the OPAC to find a book if its title, author or
subject is known

Find a book on the shelf if call number is known

Seek and locate information in each of these sources:

thesaurus, dictionary

Use an Internet directory or search engine to locate
web sites useful for research

Follow a standard format to create a bibliography for
each of these types of sources: book, magazine article, encyclopedia
article, computer program, Internet web site

Identify each of the following parts of a book and use
each of them to find information within the book: title page,
copyright page, table of contents, glossary, index

Choose leisure reading material that interests them

Produce a project such as a report, Power Point
presentation, oral presentation, etc. in which they present
information learned through research
Fifth grade activities may include:
Literature appreciation
Research skills applied in class projects
Use of print and electronic reference sources; increased emphasis on almanacs
and specialized encyclopedias
Book location skills throughout library
Read-aloud sessions with younger students
