recognize similarities and differences
-
recognize topics and details in stories
-
sequence events in stories

During the year your child will bring home his or her own
Scholastic High-Frequency Readers to share with you. These are copies of
books that we have already read in class. Each book contains words
commonly found in beginning reading materials. With your help, these books
can provide your child with important practice in reading, and a
meaningful shared experience. You may want to take some time every day to
read these High-Frequency Readers with your child.
Here are some suggestions you may find helpful:
-
Encourage your child to join in reading the story with
you, while pointing to each word.
-
Support your child as he or she reads the text
independently.
-
Write high-frequency words on flash cards or slips of
paper as they are introduced in the books.
-
Enjoy the shared-reading experience.
-
Create a place to keep these books: decorate a shoe box
or container. Add the books to the box as they are sent home.
-
Praise every effort.
