| What is Writing Workshop? Writer's Workshop is a way to
encourage children to "have a go" at trying new skills. Kindergarten, or
"Kid Writing" (invented spelling) is a part of this beginning writing.
This allows students to begin expressing themselves through spoken and
written words in a relaxed, self-paced atmosphere. It is their "special
time" to "take a chance" and become writers!!!!!!!
Writer's Workshop is a special time that is set aside during the school
day when the children write. It begins with a mini-lesson that is about 5
minutes long, taking place on the rug, or meeting place of choice.
Mini-lessons are very specific and present a specific skill or idea.
Mini-lessons are followed by talk time. During talk time the children turn
and talk to each other about the lesson that was just modeled, or
explained. The children then return to their seats and write. Writing time
could last up to 30 minutes. During this time the teacher circulates among
the children and confers with them. Finally, the children return to the
rug and share. Sharing time is very important. Two or three children are
asked to share their work for the day. The children chosen are students
who have incorporated the "skill" or lesson modeled that day.
Finally, we celebrate. Celebrations occur about every 5 to 6 weeks. The
children share a "published" piece of writing and are commended for the
fine authors they are!
