| With the beginning of the new school
year comes the start of the Tamarac Elementary School Healthy Steps Program.
Coordinated by P.E. teacher Susan
Turner, the walking program is in its sixth year. All of Miss Turner's students in grades K - 5
participate in the walk/run program during their scheduled physical
education class. They collect straws to keep track of how many laps they do on
the district's outdoor track. The students then convert the number of
laps they log into miles. This mileage is then plotted from city to city
across the United States starting from Troy.
This year my students completed 1,596.25 miles. |
| This year the Jog Jam Intramural
Program will also contribute miles toward Healthy Steps. Approximately
sixty-six 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students walked or ran on Tuesday afternoons and
Friday mornings throughout September and October for a total of 11 days.
They completed 533 miles. |
| The Healthy Steps Program was
created by the Statewide Center for Healthy Schools (www.nyhealthyschools.org).
Many school districts participate across the state in an attempt to promote
healthy lifestyles among New York State students. These schools
compete against one another striving to be the school that walks the most
miles. Our students have been working very hard to earn that
distinction, making Tamarac Elementary a Healthy School in New York State. |
