Spelling is "one of the most complex forms of language
production, mediated by phonological, orthographic, and morphological
processing*. It draws upon several language knowledge domains,
including knowledge of phonology, orthography, morphology, and semantic
relationships, as well as learned mental images of words."

(2002). Spelling performance evaluation for language and literacy:
Examiner's manual. Evanston, IL: Learning by Design.
*See the literacy definitions page for
more information on each of the domains listed above.

School-based speech-language therapists work on
spelling when it is deemed to have a negative impact on students'
ability to express themselves in writing. Understanding which of
the domains discussed above a particular student is and is not using
leads to effective and more efficient remediation of spelling
difficulties.
